CALIFORNIA: Santa Rosa to Phoenix, Arizona

Good morning America . . . here we come!  After two years of planning the day has finally arrived to begin our adventures across America.   Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”  We have been trusting in God's plan for us this year as we have planned for this adventure of traveling & learning.  It has been a challenging year of one trial after another (especially with injuries in our family), but God has been faithful with His promise that when we truly trust Him, He will guide us.  And I have been holding tight to this promise for this trip as we have hurdled one challenge after another.  He will make our path straight . . . Amen!

It to hard to believe that this day is actually here.  We planned on leaving at 5:00 am but after going to bed at 3:30am, because of doing all of those last minute yucky details of packing, Shelley and I decided that we needed at least four hours of sleep to drive the 14 hour trek today.   Brooke, Christian, and Grace slept in the RV last night and were promptly up at 7:30 warming up the yummy cinnamon rolls for everyone, laughing and giddy with excitement to leave.  I dragged myself out of bed and gathered up the last of the needed supplies while Dave kept checking one thing after another on the RV, being the wonderful protective and thorough husband that he is.  Then we said our goodbyes to the boys and as I hugged Brandon tears were flowing.  I know God has a plan in all of the decisions that Dave has made with him, but I’m still incredibly sad that he is going to miss out on so much of the trip.   And I spotted some little tears were sparkling in his eyes as hugged me and his sisters goodbye because it’s obvious that he is really going to miss us.

Only four hours later  . .  . but we're off . . . trekking  our way south through California to Phoenix, AR.    I knew California was big, but it felt like eternity before we arrived at the border of Arizona. It’s amazing how diverse California is from the beautiful Napa vineyards, the busy cities, the snowy mountains,  the flat boring valley’s, to the dry desolate desert of Joshua Tree National Park.  It took us a torturous 16 ½ hours to drive from Santa Rosa to Phoenix, Arizona. I was driving like a granny because I was it was my first time driving the RV; when we got on interstate 5 the winds were horrendous; I also had strict instructions to keep the speed at 55 miles per hour to save on gas; when we got to the grape vine, it was lightly snowing with snow was covering the mountains; then we drove through Los Angeles with all the big truckers and the traffic.

Snow on the Grapevine!!

The combination of all those factors and having to stop every 2 ½ hours for gas made for extremely long drive. When we finally arrived at the Walmart parking lot in Phoenix at 2:30 in the morning, everything was blurry because I was so tired.   It never felt so good to lay down. Despite the really long drive, the kids had a great time watching movies, playing games, messing around on the computer, and waving at trucks.
